Newspapers: it’s no secret that many have not figured out how to adapt to the Internet, and plenty of them are losing readers (and cash). One California paper is now trying something new in an attempt to remain both relevant and profitable—go niche. The Sacramento Bee has just rolled out Capitol Alert, a web site focused on California politics and targeted at political professionals. The site says that it will provide the next day’s political news at 8pm each night and will also offer extended reporting, commentary, and blogs that won’t appear in the traditional newspaper. Several blogs that were formerly available to Bee subscribers will be moved behind the firewall into the new site to create premium content.
