The phenomenon of telecoms opposing municipal broadband networks is nothing new. In fact, it’s all too familiar—just ask residents of Philadelphia and New Orleans. Usually, the reason given for opposition is that a government-owned or -operated network would amount to unfair competition. But when the companies fight municipal networks while being unwilling to invest in new infrastructure, it’s the consumers who ultimately lose out.
